About

Skadi is the giant goddess of winter, skiing, bowhunting, and mountains. After the gods killed her father Thiazi, she came to Asgard armed for war, demanding compensation. The gods offered her a husband chosen by looking only at the candidates' feet.

Hoping to choose Baldur by his beautiful feet, Skadi instead selected Njörðr, god of the sea. Their marriage was unhappy—she could not bear the sounds of the sea, and he could not endure the wolves' howling in her mountain home. They eventually separated.

Skadi represents the harsh beauty of the northern wilderness—dangerous yet magnificent. She is one of the few giants accepted among the gods, her fierce independence and hunting prowess earning her respect. She embodies survival in the coldest places.

Famous Story

When choosing her husband, Skadi saw the most beautiful feet and thought they belonged to Baldur. They were actually Njörðr's, roughened by saltwater but fair. This twist of fate led to a mismatched marriage between mountain and sea.
