✦ Personality Traits
✦ About
Njörðr is the Vanir god of the sea, wind, fishing, and wealth. Father of Freyr and Freya, he was sent to live among the Aesir as a hostage after the war between the two divine tribes, where he earned great respect for his wisdom and generosity.
Sailors pray to Njörðr for good winds and safe passage, and fishermen for bountiful catches. His hall Nóatún sits by the sea, and he is associated with the wealth that comes from maritime trade.
His ill-fated marriage to the mountain goddess Skadi taught that some differences cannot be reconciled—she could not live by the noisy sea, he could not bear the howling mountains. Yet both respected each other despite their incompatibility.
✦ Famous Story
Njörðr and Skadi tried to compromise—nine nights in the mountains, nine nights by the sea. But neither could adjust: the seagulls kept Skadi awake, while the wolves' howling drove Njörðr to despair. They parted amicably.
