About

Vishnu is the Supreme Being in Vaishnavism and the Preserver in the Hindu trinity. He maintains the cosmic order (dharma) and whenever evil threatens to overwhelm good, he incarnates on earth to restore balance.

He has taken nine avatars so far, including Rama and Krishna, with a tenth (Kalki) prophesied to come. Vishnu sleeps on the cosmic serpent Shesha, floating on the ocean of milk, dreaming the universe into existence.

Depicted with four arms holding a conch shell, discus, mace, and lotus, Vishnu embodies supreme peace and the protection of righteousness. He is blue-skinned, representing his infinite nature like the sky, and is the devoted husband of Lakshmi, goddess of fortune.

Famous Story

Vishnu has incarnated as Matsya (fish), Kurma (tortoise), Varaha (boar), Narasimha (man-lion), Vamana (dwarf), Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, and Buddha to save the world from various threats. Each avatar appears precisely when needed.
