"God of Chaos, Storms, and the Desert"
✦ Personality Traits
✦ About
Set is the god of chaos, storms, violence, and the harsh desert. He is best known as the murderer of his brother Osiris, yet he is not simply evil—he is a necessary force of disorder that makes order meaningful.
With his distinctive Set-animal head (perhaps part aardvark, part donkey, part jackal), Set represents all that is foreign, wild, and untamed. He is the red land of the desert against the black fertile soil of the Nile, the outsider who challenges the established order.
Despite his villainous role in the Osiris myth, Set served an essential function. Each night aboard Ra's solar barque, Set's tremendous strength defeats the chaos serpent Apophis, ensuring the sun rises again. Without Set's violence, there would be no sunrise. He embodies the paradox that destruction is necessary for creation.
✦ Famous Story
Set tricked Osiris at a banquet by displaying a beautiful coffin and promising it to whoever fit perfectly inside. When Osiris lay down, Set slammed the lid and threw the coffin into the Nile. This murder set in motion the great conflict with Horus that shaped Egyptian mythology.
