Izanami-no-Mikoto is the primordial goddess who, with her husband Izanagi, created Japan and birthed the gods. After creating the islands and many deities, she died giving birth to Kagutsuchi, the fire god, and descended to Yomi, the land of the dead.
When Izanagi came to retrieve her, she had already eaten the food of the underworld and could not fully return. She asked him to wait while she negotiated with the gods of Yomi, but he couldn't wait and lit a torch—seeing her rotting corpse covered in maggots and thunder gods.
Humiliated and enraged, Izanami transformed into the Queen of Yomi, vowing to kill 1,000 people each day. Izanagi responded that he would then cause 1,500 to be born—and thus life and death became intertwined forever.
