About

Amaterasu Ōmikami is the supreme deity of Shinto, the sun goddess from whom the Japanese imperial line descends. She is the ruler of Takamagahara (the High Plain of Heaven) and the source of all light and life.

When her brother Susanoo's violent behavior drove her to hide in a cave, the world was plunged into darkness. Only through the combined efforts of all the gods—including a comedic dance that made Amaterasu curious enough to peek out—was light restored to the world.

She gave the three sacred treasures to her grandson Ninigi when he descended to rule Japan: the mirror Yata no Kagami, the sword Kusanagi, and the jewel Yasakani no Magatama. These remain the imperial regalia, symbolizing the divine right to rule.

Famous Story

When Amaterasu hid in the cave, the goddess Ame-no-Uzume performed a wild, hilarious dance that made the assembled gods laugh so loudly that Amaterasu's curiosity overcame her anger. She peeked out, saw her own radiant reflection in a mirror, and was drawn back into the world.
