About

Izanagi-no-Mikoto is the primordial god who, together with his wife Izanami, created the Japanese islands and birthed the gods. Standing on the Floating Bridge of Heaven, they stirred the ocean with a jeweled spear, and the drops that fell formed the first island.

When Izanami died giving birth to the fire god, Izanagi descended to Yomi (the underworld) to retrieve her. But when he saw her rotting form, he fled in horror, and she chased him with demons. He sealed the entrance to Yomi with a boulder, and they exchanged words of eternal separation.

Upon returning to the surface, Izanagi purified himself in a river. From this purification were born the three most important kami: Amaterasu from his left eye, Tsukuyomi from his right eye, and Susanoo from his nose.

Famous Story

When Izanagi lit a torch to see his wife in Yomi, he saw maggots crawling through her body and the eight thunder gods dwelling within her. She screamed that he had shamed her, and sent the hags of Yomi to catch him. He threw objects that transformed into distractions, barely escaping.
