✦ Personality Traits
✦ About
Hel is the goddess of the dead and ruler of the underworld realm that bears her name. Daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda, she was cast into the depths by Odin and given dominion over those who die of old age, sickness, or without glory in battle.
Her appearance is striking and terrifying: one half of her body is that of a beautiful woman, the other half a corpse in decay. This duality reflects her domain between the living and the dead.
Though her realm is cold and cheerless compared to Valhalla, Hel is not evil—she is simply the keeper of those whose fate led them to her doors. She rules with grim fairness, neither cruel nor kind, accepting all who come to her regardless of their deeds in life.
✦ Famous Story
When the gods begged Hel to release Baldur from death, she agreed on one condition: every being in existence must weep for him. All creation wept except one giantess—actually Loki in disguise. Because of this, Baldur remains in Hel until Ragnarök.
