About

Baldur is the beloved god of light, joy, purity, and beauty in Norse mythology. Son of Odin and Frigg, he was so fair and gracious that light shone from him, and he was loved by all beings in the nine realms.

His beauty was not merely physical—Baldur embodied all that was good and pure. He was the most beloved of all the gods, and his hall Breidablik was a place where nothing unclean could exist.

Baldur's death at Loki's machinations marks the beginning of the end for the Norse gods. His return from Hel after Ragnarök represents the hope of renewal and the rebirth of a purer world from the ashes of the old.

Famous Story

After Frigg secured promises from all things not to harm Baldur, the gods made sport of throwing weapons at him—all bounced off harmlessly. But Loki tricked blind Höðr into throwing a mistletoe dart, the one thing Frigg had overlooked. Baldur fell dead, and all creation wept.
