About

Hathor is the goddess of love, beauty, music, dance, and joy. Often depicted with cow's horns cradling a sun disk, she embodies all pleasurable aspects of life and is called the 'Golden One' for her radiant beauty.

She welcomed the dead to the afterlife with drink and food, and was patroness of lovers, artists, and miners seeking turquoise. Yet she also had a fierce aspect—as the Eye of Ra, she once nearly destroyed humanity in her wrath.

Hathor represents the dual nature of feminine divine power—nurturing joy and terrible destruction, life-giving love and consuming rage.

Famous Story

When Ra grew angry at humanity, he sent Hathor as his Eye to punish them. She became Sekhmet and slaughtered humans until the Nile ran red. Ra, regretting his decree, tricked her with beer dyed red like blood. She drank, became peaceful Hathor again, and humanity was saved.
