Bastet is the cat-headed goddess of home, fertility, and protection. Originally depicted as a fierce lioness warrior, she evolved into the more gentle domestic cat goddess beloved by Egyptian families as their divine protector.
As a guardian deity, Bastet protected households from evil spirits, disease, and misfortune. Cats were sacred to her, and killing a cat—even accidentally—was punishable by death in ancient Egypt. Her temple at Bubastis was one of the most popular pilgrimage sites.
Despite her domestic associations, Bastet retained her fierce protective nature. She was called the "Eye of Ra" and could transform into the fearsome lioness Sekhmet when defending the innocent. She embodies the dual nature of cats—gentle and nurturing, yet capable of fierce protection.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims traveled to Bubastis for Bastet's festival, the largest in Egypt. They sailed down the Nile on boats, playing music and celebrating. At the temple, they brought mummified cats as offerings to the beloved goddess.
