Cosmic Oceanic All-seeing Law-keeping Ancient

About

Varuna is the god of the oceans, water, and the celestial ocean of the night sky. In the Vedas, he was one of the most important gods, the keeper of cosmic order (Rita) who enforced divine law and punished wrongdoers.

He sees all that happens and knows all secrets—his thousand eyes are the stars that watch from heaven. Those who break oaths or violate dharma fear Varuna's noose, which binds sinners.

Varuna represents the encompassing cosmic order, the moral law that underlies existence, and the divine surveillance that sees all deeds and thoughts.

Famous Story

When the sage Vasishtha was falsely accused, Varuna appeared as witness, for nothing escapes his sight. He declared the sage innocent, for Varuna sees truth even when it is hidden from all others. His justice restored the sage's honor.
