"King of Gods, Lord of Storms and War"
✦ Personality Traits
✦ About
Indra is the king of the Devas and ruler of Svarga (heaven). He wields the thunderbolt Vajra and rides the white elephant Airavata. As god of storms, rain, and war, he is the mightiest of the Vedic gods.
His greatest feat was slaying the serpent Vritra who had imprisoned all the world's waters, releasing them to flow as rivers and bring life to the land. Indra represents the cosmic battle between order and chaos, light and darkness.
Though his prominence decreased in later Hinduism, Indra remains the archetypal divine warrior—powerful, glorious, but also flawed and subject to karma like all beings.
✦ Famous Story
The serpent Vritra had swallowed all the world's waters, causing terrible drought. Indra, fortified by soma, took up his vajra and battled the demon. With a mighty blow he split Vritra open, releasing the waters that became the rivers of the world.
