About

Tyr is the Norse god of war and justice, once considered the chief of the gods before Odin rose to prominence. Unlike the chaotic warfare of other war gods, Tyr represents the lawful aspects of battle—heroic courage, fair combat, and victory through honor.

He is most famous for his sacrifice: when the gods needed to bind the monstrous wolf Fenrir, only Tyr was brave enough to place his hand in the wolf's mouth as a pledge of good faith. When Fenrir realized he was trapped, he bit off Tyr's hand—but Tyr's sacrifice saved the gods.

Tyr embodies the warrior's code of honor, where keeping one's word matters more than personal loss. His missing hand is a constant reminder that sometimes justice requires sacrifice.

Famous Story

Fenrir agreed to be bound only if one of the gods placed their hand in his mouth as surety. All the gods refused except Tyr. When the magical chain Gleipnir held, Fenrir bit off Tyr's hand in rage—but Tyr stood unflinching, having known the cost of keeping the gods safe.
