✦ About
Oni are the demonic ogres of Japanese folklore, fearsome beings with horns, wild hair, and skin of red, blue, or other unnatural colors. They carry iron clubs (kanabō) and are associated with thunder, disaster, disease, and punishment.
In Buddhist tradition, oni serve as torturers in the various hells, punishing sinners according to their crimes. In folklore, they may be mountain-dwelling monsters who raid villages, kidnap people, or cause natural disasters. However, some oni can be converted to Buddhism and become protective guardians.
The festival of Setsubun involves driving out oni by throwing beans and shouting "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" (Demons out! Fortune in!). Oni represent the forces of chaos and destruction that must be periodically expelled to maintain order and good fortune.
✦ Famous Story
The hero Momotarō traveled to Onigashima (Demon Island) with his animal companions to defeat the oni who had been terrorizing the land. After a fierce battle, the oni king surrendered, returned their stolen treasure, and promised never to do evil again.
