Momotarō, the Peach Boy, is Japan's most beloved folk hero. Born from a giant peach floating down a river, he was discovered by an elderly childless couple who raised him as their own. He grew to be extraordinarily strong and pure of heart.
When demons (oni) from Onigashima (Demon Island) terrorized the land, young Momotarō set out to defeat them. Along the way, he befriended a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant by sharing his millet dumplings (kibidango). Together, this unlikely band defeated the demons and brought back their treasure.
Momotarō represents the Japanese ideal of a hero: brave but kind, strong but humble, and successful through building friendships and cooperation rather than brute force alone.
