The Morrígan is the Irish goddess of war, fate, death, and sovereignty. Often appearing as a trio of sisters (Badb, Macha, and Morrígan/Nemain), she embodies the terror and glory of battle and the inexorable nature of fate.
She appears on battlefields as a crow or raven, feasting on the slain, or as a washerwoman cleaning the bloodied clothes of those fated to die. She can grant victory or doom, inspire warriors with battle-fury or terrify them into defeat. Her favor was sought but her appearance was feared.
The Morrígan is particularly associated with the hero Cú Chulainn, appearing at his birth, offering him her love (which he unwisely refused), and ultimately foretelling his death. She represents the dark goddess who embodies the female aspects of war and fate.

Before the second battle of Mag Tuired, the Morrígan mated with the Dagda to secure victory for the Tuatha Dé Danann. During the battle, she chanted incantations that confused the enemy. Victory belonged to those she blessed—and doom to those she cursed.
