About

Cú Chulainn is the legendary hero of the Ulster Cycle, Ireland's greatest warrior. Born Sétanta, he earned his famous name ("Culann's Hound") when as a child he killed the fierce hound of the smith Culann and offered to take its place as guardian.

His battle-rage (ríastrad) transformed him into a monstrous, nearly invincible form—one eye would sink into his skull while the other bulged out, his body contorted, and battle-light blazed from his forehead. In this state, he could not distinguish friend from foe.

Single-handedly, he defended Ulster against the armies of Queen Medb during the Táin Bó Cúailnge, fighting each day while the Ulster men lay under a curse. He died young, as prophesied, but achieved the immortality of legend.

Famous Story

When mortally wounded, Cú Chulainn tied himself to a standing stone so he could die on his feet, facing his enemies. Only when a raven landed on his shoulder did they know he was truly dead—and the hero-light left his face.
