Wise Ancient Counseling Sacrificed Eternal

About

Mimir is the wisest of all beings, guardian of the well of wisdom that lies beneath one of the roots of Yggdrasil. His knowledge encompasses all things that were, are, and will be, making him an invaluable counselor.

Odin sacrificed his eye to drink from Mimir's well and gain its wisdom. Even after Mimir was beheaded by the Vanir, Odin preserved his head with herbs and runes so that Mimir could continue to provide counsel.

Mimir represents the price of wisdom—that true knowledge often comes at great cost, and that the wise continue to teach even beyond death.

Famous Story

When the Vanir felt cheated in a hostage exchange, they beheaded Mimir and sent his head to Odin. But Odin would not lose such wisdom—he embalmed the head, sang charms over it, and gave it the power to speak. To this day, Mimir's head counsels the Allfather.
