Sir Lancelot du Lac is the greatest knight of the Round Table, unmatched in combat and the embodiment of chivalric virtue. Raised by the Lady of the Lake in her underwater realm, he came to Camelot as a young man and quickly proved himself Arthur's champion.
Lancelot excelled in every knightly virtue—prowess in arms, courtesy, generosity, and loyalty. He rescued Guinevere numerous times, defeated countless foes, and was the model that all other knights aspired to become. Yet his greatest strength became his greatest weakness.
His forbidden love for Queen Guinevere, though it inspired him to his greatest deeds, ultimately led to the destruction of Camelot and the Round Table fellowship he loved. He represents the tragic conflict between passionate love and sworn duty.

To prove his love for Guinevere, Lancelot fought in a tournament in disguise, deliberately losing at first to test whether she would love him even in defeat. When she sent word of her faith in him, he revealed himself and won every contest.
