"Goddess of Time, Death, and Liberation"
✦ Personality Traits
✦ About
Kali is the fierce goddess of time, death, and liberation—the destroyer of evil and the liberator of souls. With her dark skin, wild hair, garland of severed heads, and skirt of severed arms, she represents time that devours all things and the ego-death necessary for spiritual liberation.
She emerged from Durga's forehead during battle, her rage so intense that only Shiva lying beneath her feet could stop her rampage. Yet despite her terrifying appearance, Kali is a loving mother to her devotees, protecting them from evil and granting moksha (liberation).
Kali represents the ultimate truth—that death comes for all, that time spares none, but that this destruction is itself liberation from illusion and rebirth into pure consciousness.
✦ Famous Story
When demons threatened to overwhelm the gods, Kali emerged to destroy them. Her battle frenzy grew until she danced upon corpses, threatening to destroy the universe. Shiva lay beneath her feet; when she stepped on him, shame stopped her—reminding us that even destruction has limits.
