About

The Hwarang were an elite corps of young noble warriors in Silla, combining martial training with artistic cultivation, Buddhist philosophy, and absolute loyalty. Their name means "Flower Knights" or "Flowering Youth," reflecting their unique blend of beauty and martial prowess.

Founded in the 6th century, the Hwarang followed the "Five Secular Commandments": loyalty to the king, filial piety, trust among friends, never retreating in battle, and taking life only when necessary. They trained in swordsmanship, archery, and horse riding while also studying poetry, music, and Buddhist scriptures.

Many of Silla's greatest generals, including Kim Yushin, came from the Hwarang. They were instrumental in Silla's unification of the Three Kingdoms. The Hwarang represent the Korean ideal of the warrior-scholar: deadly in battle but refined in peace.

Famous Story

Before battle, Hwarang would gather at scenic mountains and rivers to compose poetry, commune with nature, and strengthen their spirits. When combat came, these same youths who had debated philosophy would fight with a ferocity that terrified their enemies.
