About

Kim Yushin (595-673 CE) was the greatest general in Korean history, the military architect of Silla's unification of the Three Kingdoms. A descendant of Gaya royalty, he rose to become Supreme Commander and led Silla to victory in dozens of battles over his 60-year military career.

His strategic brilliance and personal courage were legendary. He allied with Tang China to defeat first Baekje (660 CE) and then Goguryeo (668 CE). When Tang attempted to take the peninsula for itself, Kim Yushin led the war that expelled them, securing Korean independence.

Even near death at 79, he led troops from his sickbed. When the king hesitated to march, Kim Yushin appeared in full armor, inspiring the army. He died shortly after ensuring Silla's final victory, having spent his entire life in service to unification.

Famous Story

As a young man, Kim Yushin's sword moved on its own and killed his beloved kisaeng lover, whom the spirits deemed a distraction from his destiny. Accepting this as fate's guidance, he dedicated himself wholly to his mission, never allowing personal attachments to interfere with his duty again.
