Hwanung was the son of the Heavenly Emperor Hwanin who descended to Mount Taebaek with 3,000 followers to establish a sacred city. He brought the arts of civilization to Korea and fathered Dangun with Ungnyeo, the bear-woman.

Hwanung descended from heaven with three divine symbols: rain, clouds, and wind. He ruled over 360 affairs of human life, teaching agriculture, medicine, and law.
