✦ About
Dangun Wanggeom is the legendary founder of Gojoseon, the first Korean kingdom, in 2333 BCE. According to the founding myth, he was born from Hwanung (son of the Heavenly Emperor) and Ungnyeo, a bear who transformed into a woman after 100 days of eating only garlic and mugwort in a cave.
Dangun established his capital at Asadal and ruled for over 1,500 years, bringing civilization, law, and culture to the Korean people. He taught agriculture, medicine, and the arts of civilization, transforming a land of scattered tribes into a unified nation.
After his long reign, Dangun became a mountain god, retreating to Mount Taebaek. October 3rd, the date traditionally associated with his founding of Korea, is celebrated as National Foundation Day (Gaecheonjeol).
✦ Famous Story
A tiger and a bear both wished to become human. Hwanung told them to stay in a cave for 100 days, eating only garlic and mugwort. The tiger gave up, but the bear persevered and became a beautiful woman. She prayed for a child, and Hwanung married her, giving birth to Dangun.
