"Remover of Obstacles, God of Beginnings"
✦ Personality Traits
✦ About
Ganesha is the beloved elephant-headed god of beginnings, success, wisdom, and the remover of obstacles. He is invoked at the start of any new venture—whether a journey, business, wedding, or examination—to ensure success.
Son of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha's elephant head has many origin stories, the most popular being that Shiva beheaded him unknowingly and replaced his head with an elephant's. His large belly symbolizes his ability to digest all good and bad in life peacefully.
Riding a mouse (his vehicle Mushika), Ganesha demonstrates that even the mightiest can be humble. He is the patron of arts and sciences, letters and learning, and is worshipped first among the gods.
✦ Famous Story
When the sage Vyasa needed someone to write down the Mahabharata, only Ganesha was intelligent enough. He agreed on condition that Vyasa never pause—so Vyasa composed verses faster than anyone could write, and Ganesha broke his own tusk to use as a pen when his stylus broke.
