About

Ebisu is the only one of the Seven Lucky Gods who originated purely in Japan. He is the patron of fishermen, merchants, and good fortune, always depicted with a fishing rod, a sea bream (tai), and a cheerful smile.

According to legend, Ebisu was born without bones (or as a leech child) and cast into the sea by his parents Izanagi and Izanami. Despite this cruel beginning, he survived, grew strong, and became the beloved god of prosperity and good luck. His perseverance through hardship is seen as his greatest virtue.

Ebisu is deaf, which is why he doesn't hear the call to gather with other gods in October. He remains to bless those who stayed behind, and his festivals are held when other gods are absent.

Famous Story

Fishermen in Japan would throw back the first fish they caught as an offering to Ebisu, believing he would reward their generosity with a larger catch. His smile on rough seas was said to calm the waves and guide ships safely to shore.
