✦ Personality Traits
✦ About
Admiral Yi Sun-sin is Korea's greatest military hero, an undefeated naval commander who saved his nation during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598. Against overwhelming odds and despite facing political persecution, he never lost a single battle in his 23 naval engagements.
His tactical genius was matched only by his moral integrity. Even when stripped of his rank and tortured due to political machinations, he returned to service when called, commanding just 13 ships against 333 Japanese vessels—and won decisively at the Battle of Myeongnyang.
Yi's innovations in naval warfare, including the legendary turtle ship (geobukseon), changed the course of history. He died in battle at Noryang, his last words reportedly being "The battle is at its height. Beat my war drums. Do not announce my death."
✦ Famous Story
At Myeongnyang, Admiral Yi faced impossible odds—13 ships against 333. Using the treacherous currents of the strait, he funneled the Japanese fleet into a narrow channel where their numbers became a disadvantage. He sank 31 ships without losing any of his own.
