About

Jumong, meaning "skilled archer," was the legendary founder of Goguryeo, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. Born from Hae Mo-su (a heavenly prince) and Lady Yuhwa (daughter of the river god), he was said to have been born from an egg after his mother was touched by sunlight.

From childhood, Jumong displayed supernatural archery skills that earned him his name. Persecuted by jealous princes of Buyeo, he fled south with three companions and founded Goguryeo in 37 BCE at the age of 22.

Under Jumong's leadership, Goguryeo grew from a small mountain fortress into a powerful kingdom that would dominate Northeast Asia for 700 years. His descendants would go on to challenge even the mighty Chinese empires.

Famous Story

When Jumong fled Buyeo, he reached a river with no way to cross and pursuers closing in. He called out, 'I am the son of Heaven and grandson of the River God!' The fish and turtles rose to form a bridge, allowing him to escape and fulfill his destiny.
