✦ Personality Traits
✦ About
Yi Bang-won (1367-1422), later King Taejong, was the fifth son of Joseon's founder but became the power behind the throne and eventually the third king. His political genius and ruthlessness shaped Joseon's government for 500 years.
While his father hesitated, Yi Bang-won acted decisively. He personally killed the powerful minister Jeong Do-jeon and eliminated his brothers in the "Strife of Princes" to secure the succession. Once king, he strengthened royal authority, reformed government, and established the systems that made Joseon function.
Most importantly, he recognized that his son Sejong had the wisdom he himself lacked. He ruthlessly removed all obstacles to Sejong's rule, including killing Sejong's father-in-law. His brutality enabled the golden age that followed.
✦ Famous Story
When Yi Bang-won learned that his father-in-law was planning to make Sejong's rival the heir, he immediately ordered the man's execution—despite Sejong's pleas for mercy. He told his son: 'You must hate me for this, but someday you will understand.'
