About

Yeon Gaesomun was the most powerful military dictator in Goguryeo's history. In 642 CE, he led a coup that killed over 100 nobles and the king himself, seizing absolute power as Dae Magniji (Grand General). He ruled Goguryeo with an iron fist for 24 years.

Despite his brutal rise to power, Yeon Gaesomun proved to be a formidable defender of Goguryeo. He repelled multiple massive invasions by Tang China's Emperor Taizong, one of history's greatest conquerors. The emperor died without conquering Goguryeo, calling it his life's greatest regret.

Yeon Gaesomun was known for his imposing presence—he wore five swords at his waist and made nobles bow as he stepped on their backs to mount his horse. After his death, his sons' infighting led to Goguryeo's eventual fall.

Famous Story

When Tang Emperor Taizong sent an envoy demanding submission, Yeon Gaesomun had the envoy imprisoned and sent back a defiant message. Taizong personally led 300,000 troops to punish this insult—and was defeated. The emperor's failure against Goguryeo remained his greatest shame.
