About

White Buffalo Calf Woman (Ptesan-Wi) is the sacred prophet of the Lakota Sioux, who brought the chanunpa (sacred pipe) and taught the Seven Sacred Rites that form the spiritual foundation of Lakota life.

She appeared to two scouts as a beautiful woman dressed in white buckskin. One scout had lustful thoughts and was reduced to bones by a cloud; the other treated her with respect and was charged to prepare his people. She taught them how to pray, honor all living things, and maintain the balance between humans and nature.

Before departing, she transformed into a white buffalo calf, promising to return in times of great change. The rare birth of a white buffalo calf is considered a sacred sign of her spiritual presence and a call for humanity to come together in peace.

Famous Story

When the two scouts approached her, she told the disrespectful one: 'You do not know who I am.' A cloud enveloped him and when it lifted, only his skeleton remained. The respectful scout received her message and led her to his people, where she taught them for four days before her transformation.
