✦ About
Uesugi Kenshin was one of Japan's most powerful warlords during the Sengoku period, known as the "Dragon of Echigo" for his military prowess. A devout Buddhist and worshipper of Bishamonten, he believed himself to be the avatar of the war god.
Unlike other warlords who fought for land and power, Kenshin often fought to uphold justice and righteousness. His legendary rivalry with Takeda Shingen produced five inconclusive Battles of Kawanakajima, considered the greatest samurai battles in Japanese history.
Kenshin was known for his administrative skills, sake drinking, and possibly being asexual or secretly female. He died suddenly at age 49, supposedly of stomach cancer or assassination, leaving his territory to civil war among his adopted heirs.
✦ Famous Story
In the fourth Battle of Kawanakajima, Kenshin personally charged into Shingen's command camp and attacked him with his sword. Shingen famously defended himself with his iron war fan. This single combat between rival lords became legendary in Japanese history.
