✦ Personality Traits
✦ About
Toyotomi Hideyoshi rose from being a peasant sandal-bearer to become the second great unifier of Japan and its supreme ruler. His rise was the most dramatic in Japanese history—proof that talent and cunning could overcome birth and tradition.
Starting as a servant of Oda Nobunaga, Hideyoshi proved himself through clever strategies and unwavering loyalty. After Nobunaga's assassination, Hideyoshi avenged him and continued the unification, conquering or diplomatically winning over all remaining opposition.
Despite his achievements, Hideyoshi was denied the title of Shogun due to his common birth. Instead, he took the title of Kampaku (Imperial Regent) and Taikō (retired Kampaku). His later years were marked by ambition gone too far, including invasions of Korea that ultimately failed.
✦ Famous Story
In winter, young Hideyoshi warmed Nobunaga's sandals by keeping them inside his clothes. This simple act of devotion caught Nobunaga's attention, and he began to rise. From such humble beginnings came the man who would rule all Japan.
