About

Shango is one of the most powerful Orishas in Yoruba religion, the god of thunder, lightning, fire, and justice. Once a mortal king of the Oyo Empire, he ascended to become a deity through his legendary deeds and fiery temperament.

With his double-headed axe (oshe) and ability to breathe fire, Shango represents masculine power, virility, and righteous anger. He punishes liars and wrongdoers with lightning strikes while rewarding the honest and brave. His followers dance to the rhythm of batá drums during his festivals.

Shango's worship spread across the Atlantic, becoming central to Afro-Caribbean religions like Santería (where he syncretized with Saint Barbara), Candomblé, and Vodou. His colors are red and white, and his sacred number is six.

Famous Story

As a mortal king, Shango gained power over lightning but accidentally destroyed his own palace and family. Consumed by grief, he wandered until he ascended into the sky, becoming the Orisha of thunder—his destructive power now channeled toward justice.
