Saint Peter, originally a fisherman named Simon, was chosen by Jesus to be the rock upon which He would build His Church. Given the name Peter (meaning "rock"), he became the leader of the apostles and, in Catholic tradition, the first Pope.
Peter was impulsive, passionate, and deeply human. He walked on water to meet Jesus but sank when he doubted. He declared Jesus the Messiah but later denied Him three times. Yet after the Resurrection, Jesus restored him and commissioned him to "feed my sheep."
On Pentecost, Peter preached the first Christian sermon and converted thousands. He traveled throughout the Roman world spreading the Gospel until his martyrdom in Rome, where tradition says he was crucified upside down, feeling unworthy to die as his Lord had died.

After Jesus' resurrection, He asked Peter three times 'Do you love me?'—once for each denial. Each time Peter affirmed his love, Jesus commanded him to care for His followers, restoring Peter fully and establishing his role as shepherd of the Church.
