✦ About
Saint Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) is one of the most beloved saints in Christian history, known for his radical embrace of poverty and his deep love for all creatures. The son of a wealthy merchant, he renounced his inheritance to follow Christ in absolute simplicity.
Francis founded the Franciscan Order based on living the Gospel literally—without possessions, serving the poor, and preaching peace. He is famous for preaching to birds, making peace with a wolf, and seeing all creation as his brothers and sisters.
Two years before his death, Francis received the stigmata—the wounds of Christ—making him the first recorded person to bear these marks. His Canticle of the Sun is one of the first great works of Italian literature, praising "Brother Sun" and "Sister Moon." He is the patron saint of animals and ecology.
✦ Famous Story
When a fierce wolf terrorized the town of Gubbio, Francis went alone to meet it. He made the sign of the cross and spoke to 'Brother Wolf,' making peace between the beast and the townspeople, who fed it until its natural death.
