"God of Thunder and Lightning"
✦ Personality Traits
✦ About
Raijin is the terrifying god of thunder, lightning, and storms. Depicted as a muscular demon-like figure surrounded by drums, he creates thunder by beating his drums (taiko), while lightning is his divine anger striking the earth.
With fierce features, wild hair, and usually accompanied by his brother Fūjin (wind god), Raijin embodies the frightening power of storms. Japanese parents told children that Raijin would steal their belly buttons if they didn't cover their stomachs during thunderstorms.
Despite his fearsome appearance, Raijin is not evil—he is simply the untamed force of nature. Storms bring destruction but also life-giving rain. He is worshipped for protection from lightning and for the rain that nourishes crops.
✦ Famous Story
Raijin and Fūjin were originally demons who opposed the Buddha. When defeated, they were converted to become protectors of Buddhist temples. Now they stand as fierce guardians at temple gates, their wild power turned to protection.
