✦ About
Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent, is one of the most important deities of ancient Mesoamerica, worshipped by the Aztec, Maya, and earlier civilizations. He combines the quetzal bird (representing the heavens) with the serpent (representing earth), symbolizing the union of sky and land.
As god of wind, air, and learning, Quetzalcoatl is credited with creating humanity, discovering maize, and inventing the calendar and books. Unlike other Aztec gods, he opposed human sacrifice, preferring offerings of butterflies and jade. He represented wisdom, civilization, and priesthood.
Legend tells that he was tricked into disgrace by the god Tezcatlipoca and left Mexico on a raft of serpents, promising to return. This prophecy allegedly influenced the Aztec reception of Cortés, who arrived from the east in the year prophesied for Quetzalcoatl's return.
✦ Famous Story
Quetzalcoatl descended to the underworld to retrieve the bones of the previous humanity. Mictlantecuhtli, lord of death, set traps, but Quetzalcoatl succeeded. Though the bones shattered, he sprinkled his blood upon them, and from the fragments arose the current race of humans.
