✦ Personality Traits
✦ About
Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, fire, lightning, and wind. She is believed to reside in Kīlauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, one of the world's most active volcanoes. Her fiery temper and passionate nature make her both revered and feared.
She creates new land as lava flows into the sea, literally building the Hawaiian islands—but destroys whatever lies in her path. Her legendary rivalry with her sister Nāmaka, goddess of the sea, caused Pele to be chased across the islands until she found her current home.
Pele is said to appear as either a beautiful young woman in a flowing red dress or as an old woman with white hair. Those who meet her on the road and show kindness are blessed; those who disrespect her face her fiery wrath.
✦ Famous Story
Pele fell in love with the mortal chief Lohiau. When she could not stay with him, she sent her sister Hi'iaka to fetch him. But Hi'iaka and Lohiau fell in love. In her jealous rage, Pele killed Lohiau with lava—then, overcome with regret, she brought him back to life.
