About

Neptune is the Roman god of the sea, earthquakes, and horses, equivalent to the Greek Poseidon. He ruled over all bodies of water and was essential to a maritime empire like Rome, which depended on the Mediterranean for trade and conquest.

Neptune's importance grew as Rome expanded across the seas. Sailors prayed to him before voyages, and his festival, the Neptunalia, was celebrated in July during the hottest season when water was most precious. He was often depicted with his trident, the three-pronged spear that could shake the earth and calm the seas.

As god of horses, Neptune was also associated with chariot racing, one of Rome's most popular entertainments. The connection between sea and horses may stem from the foam-like manes of waves or the horse's association with springs and rivers.

Famous Story

When Rome fought its wars across the Mediterranean, Neptune was invoked before every major naval battle. The victory at Actium that gave Augustus sole rule of Rome was attributed to Neptune's favor, and temples were built in his honor.
