About

Māui is the legendary demigod hero of Polynesian mythology, famous throughout Hawaii, New Zealand, Tahiti, and across the Pacific. Born small and seemingly worthless, he became the greatest hero through cleverness, determination, and magical achievements.

His legendary feats include fishing up the islands from the sea using his magical hook, slowing the sun so humans would have longer days to work, discovering fire for humanity by tricking the fire goddess, and attempting to conquer death itself by crawling into the goddess of death.

Māui represents humanity's defiance of cosmic forces, the trickster who reshapes the world to benefit mortals. Though he ultimately died trying to win immortality for humanity, his achievements remain written across the Pacific islands themselves.

Famous Story

When the sun moved too fast across the sky, Māui braided a rope from his sister's hair, climbed to the sun's resting place, and beat it until it agreed to move more slowly. From then on, humanity had long days to fish, farm, and create.
