About

Mars is the Roman god of war and second only to Jupiter in importance. Unlike the Greek Ares who represented war's brutality, Mars was a more dignified figure—the divine father of Romulus and Remus and thus ancestor of all Romans.

As the father of Rome's founders, Mars held special significance as the guardian of the Roman state and its military might. The month of March is named for him, and it was the traditional beginning of the military campaign season. Roman soldiers prayed to Mars before battle and dedicated spoils to him after victory.

Mars also had agricultural aspects, protecting crops and ensuring fertile fields. The Campus Martius (Field of Mars) in Rome was both a military training ground and a sacred space where armies gathered before marching to war.

Famous Story

Mars fell in love with the Vestal Virgin Rhea Silvia. From their union were born the twins Romulus and Remus, who would be nursed by a she-wolf and grow to found Rome—the city that would become Mars's greatest monument.
