About

Kitsune are supernatural fox spirits that grow more powerful as they age. A kitsune that lives 100 years gains the ability to take human form. After 1,000 years, they grow a ninth tail and become divine, with fur turning gold or white.

Some kitsune serve Inari as sacred messengers, protecting shrines and guiding mortals. Others are tricksters who seduce humans, steal food, or play elaborate pranks. Some even fall in love with humans, becoming devoted spouses—though tragedy often follows when their true nature is revealed.

Kitsune possess many magical abilities: shape-shifting, possession, creating illusions, and generating fox-fire (kitsunebi). They may be benevolent guardians or dangerous tricksters, but all are intelligent, powerful, and never quite what they seem.

Famous Story

A man discovered his wife of many years was a kitsune when a dog frightened her into revealing her tails. She fled in shame, but each night returned in fox form to watch over her husband and children, still loving them despite being discovered.
