"The Reluctant Prophet, Messenger to Nineveh"
✦ Personality Traits
✦ About
Jonah is the prophet who ran from God's call to preach to Nineveh, Israel's enemy. He boarded a ship going the opposite direction, but God sent a great storm. When the sailors cast Jonah overboard, a great fish swallowed him whole.
After three days in the belly of the fish, Jonah prayed and was vomited onto dry land. He finally preached to Nineveh, and to his frustration, the entire city repented and was spared.
Jonah represents the human tendency to resist God's wider purposes, the impossibility of escaping divine calling, and God's mercy that extends even to our enemies—a mercy we often struggle to share.
✦ Famous Story
Inside the great fish, Jonah prayed: 'From the depths of Sheol I called for help, and you listened to my cry.' After three days, the fish vomited Jonah onto dry land. This time, when God said 'Go to Nineveh,' Jonah went.
