About

Jang Bogo (died 846 CE) was the greatest maritime figure in Korean history, building a commercial empire that dominated the seas of East Asia. From his base at Cheonghaejin on Wando Island, he controlled the maritime trade routes connecting Korea, China, and Japan.

Rising from common origins, Jang Bogo first made his name as a military commander in Tang China. Returning to Silla, he was outraged to find Korean people being kidnapped and sold as slaves by pirates. He petitioned the king for troops and established Cheonghaejin, creating a naval force that eliminated piracy and protected Korean merchants.

His trading network stretched from the Middle East to Japan. At his peak, no ship could sail the Yellow Sea without his permission. His power grew so great that he became a kingmaker in Silla's court politics—and was eventually assassinated for it.

Famous Story

When Jang Bogo discovered Koreans being sold in Chinese slave markets, he could have simply profited from the trade like others. Instead, he dedicated his life to ending it, creating a naval force strong enough to make the seas safe for his people.
