About

Jacob was the grandson of Abraham who deceived his father to steal his brother Esau's blessing, yet became the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. His name means 'supplanter' or 'deceiver,' but after wrestling with God, he was renamed Israel—'one who struggles with God.'

His life was marked by both trickery and transformation. He tricked Esau and was tricked by Laban. He fled his homeland and eventually returned to face his brother, but on that night, he wrestled with a mysterious figure until dawn and refused to let go without a blessing.

Jacob represents the human struggle with both God and self—the deceiver who becomes a patriarch, the wrestler who limps away blessed, the transformation that comes from encounter with the divine.

Famous Story

The night before meeting Esau, Jacob wrestled with a mysterious man until dawn. When the man saw he could not prevail, he touched Jacob's hip, dislocating it. Still Jacob held on: 'I will not let you go unless you bless me.' He was renamed Israel and walked away limping but blessed.
