✦ About
Garuda is the legendary king of birds in Hindu and Buddhist mythology, a divine eagle-like being who serves as the mount (vahana) of the god Vishnu. He is depicted with a golden body, red wings, a white face, and an eagle's beak.
Born from an egg, Garuda's mother was enslaved by her sister's naga (serpent) children. To free her, he was tasked with stealing amrita (the nectar of immortality) from the gods. He succeeded, defeating gods and breaking through supernatural barriers, earning Vishnu's respect and the boon of immortality.
Garuda is the eternal enemy of nagas, representing the cosmic conflict between sky and earth, eagle and serpent. He is the national symbol of Indonesia and Thailand, embodying speed, power, and martial prowess. His name means "the devourer" as he consumes the serpents of ignorance.
✦ Famous Story
To steal amrita, Garuda had to pass through spinning wheels of fire, fight the gods, and overcome the naga guardians. He succeeded in everything. Indra's thunderbolt could not penetrate him. He then offered the amrita to free his mother—and Vishnu, impressed by his power and devotion, made him immortal and his vehicle.
