About

Eulji Mundeok was a legendary military commander of Goguryeo who achieved one of the most stunning victories in East Asian history. In 612 CE, he faced the invasion of Sui China's Emperor Yang, who led over one million soldiers—the largest army ever assembled in ancient East Asia.

Using brilliant guerrilla tactics, feigned retreats, and psychological warfare, Eulji Mundeok lured the Sui army deep into Goguryeo territory. At the Salsu River (modern Cheongcheon River), he unleashed a devastating flood attack that annihilated the Sui forces. Of 305,000 elite troops that crossed the Yalu River, only 2,700 returned.

This catastrophic defeat contributed to the fall of the Sui dynasty itself. Eulji Mundeok is celebrated as a master strategist who proved that courage and wisdom can overcome even the mightiest empire.

Famous Story

Before the final battle, Eulji Mundeok sent a mocking poem to the Sui general: 'Your divine plans have plumbed the heavens; Your subtle reckoning has spanned the earth. You win every battle, your merit is great; Why not be content and stop the war?' This psychological attack demoralized the enemy before his devastating counterattack.
