About

Dionysus is the god of wine, festivity, ecstasy, and theater—the youngest of the Olympians and the only one with a mortal mother. He represents the liberating power of wine and the transformative experience of stepping outside one's ordinary self.

Twice-born, Dionysus was rescued from his dying mother Semele by Zeus, who sewed the infant into his own thigh until he was ready to be born again. This dual birth marks him as a god of death and rebirth, transformation and renewal.

Dionysus's worship involved ecstatic rituals where participants transcended their normal identities through wine, dance, and music. He embodies the parts of human nature that civilization tries to suppress—the wild, the instinctive, the ecstatic. He is both liberator and destroyer.

Famous Story

When King Pentheus of Thebes refused to honor Dionysus and tried to imprison him, the god drove the women of Thebes into a frenzy. Pentheus's own mother, in her madness, tore her son apart with her bare hands, mistaking him for a lion.
